When Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ released 20 years back, nobody would have anticipated the love it will get in its run. The romantic classic tugged at the heartstrings of one and all back then and continues to do so even now.
DDLJ completed 20 years of its release on Monday (October 19) and to celebrate the grand feat, filmmaker Rohit Shetty and his team came up with a unique way.
Rohit’s team, along with SRK’s production house Red Chillies, posted a video that shows SRK and Kajol chit-chatting about, perhaps, the biggest movie of their respective careers.
What ensues is a major nostalgia that takes us back to the world of Raj and Simran’s innocent love.
‘Pyaar karti ho mujhse?’
‘Sabse zyaada.’
Mujhpar yakeen hai?’
‘Khudse zyaada.’
‘Bass phir toh sirf doli utthne ki der hai.’
Believe it or not, SRK and Kajol can still make you skip a beat. And we speak for everyone, when we say that their chemistry keeps getting better and better. The dynamic duo rekindle the chemistry with SRK saying, “Agar yeh 20 saal baad bhi tujhse pyaar karti hai, toh yeh paltegi.. palat, palat, palat,” and she does that. And you can’t help but just smile and wonder in awe.

With the Aditya Chopra directorial, SRK and Kajol made their characters – a fun loving London-bred Punjabi boy Raj and NRI simpleton Simran – eternal and created a permanent place in the history of Indian cinema. The sweet-sour relationship between Raj and Simran was enhanced by SRK and Kajol’s quirky chemistry which speaks of its laurels even today.
Earlier in the day, SRK took to Twitter to share a picture in which he and Kajol recreated the famous DDLJ poster with the caption that read, “Want to thank team Rohit Shetty and Red Chillies for doing this last minute. All looked happy that I picked Kajol again.”
In the poster, Shah Rukh Khan is seen carrying Kajol on his shoulder and both of them are all smiles. SRK is even sporting a fedora hat, which was central to his character in DDLJ. (Read the full story here)
Talking about the cult classic, DDLJ brought a refreshing change as well as a clutter breaking and trend-making entertainer with all ingredients of a Bollywood masala potboiler — love, romance, comedy, action, melodrama, thrills, songs and dance — put together cohesively to tell a story of the victory of true love.
The film has a simple story — Raj meets Simran during an European holiday, love blossoms between them, but winning over the girl’s conservative family is not a cakewalk for the hero, who then makes every effort to take his ‘dulhania’ (bride) with him.
Produced by the late Yash Chopra, the film’s songs like “Tujhe dekha toh ye jaana sanam”, “Mehndi lagaa ke rakhna”, “Ruk ja oh dil deewane” and “Mere khwabon mein jo aaye” continue to be played even today.
Th film holds the record of the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema as it continues to be screened at the iconic Maratha Mandir theatre here.
There are many unforgettable aspects of the film — the plush yellow mustard fields, the Swiss cow bell, SRK’s ‘Senorita’ and ‘Bade bade shehron mein choti choti baatein hoti rehti hain” dialogues, Kajol’s pristine white salwar suit and the famous climax, where Kajol runs towards her bruised lover, who’s already aboard a moving train.
