Singer Shaan has shared his two cents on the heavy usage of autotune among present-day musical artists. According to the award-winning singer when an autotune becomes the major part of a track, there remains little difference between a singer’s voice and the technical implementation. “Today’s singers are perfectly in key and they sing beautifully. Well, just that ki ek disadvantage ho gayi hai ki aajkal har gaane mei autotune daala jaata hai. (There is only one disadvantage that nowadays in every song an autotune is added),” said Shaan in an interview with Ranveer Allahabadia on his podcast for YouTube.
Shaan added, “Humare bhi gaane me daala jaata hai. From 2006-2007 onwards har gaane me autotune. Usme yehi ho jaata hai ki 19-20 aur 12-20 me koi fark nahi hai. 12 waala bhi 20 lag raha hai aur 19 waala bhi 20 lag raha hai. (Our songs have autotune as well. (But) From 2006 to 2007 onwards an autotune is added to almost every song. In that, it happens that there is no difference. Both of them sound almost the same).”
Previously, Shaan took a dig at new-age singers highlighting how they have shifted to “minimalistic” songs. He also mimicked them playing a soft tune on their guitars jokingly stating that these types of slow, soothing tracks make the singers appear they are not interested in singing.
Shaan said, “Nowadays people prefer these simple, personal, minimalistic kinds of songs. Matlab, agar woh kuch zyada agar interest dikha diya toh shayad logon ki interest kam ho jaati. ‘Main toh aise hi gaa raha tha. Tujhe pasand aaya toh aya.’ (It seems that if they showed too much interest, then the interest of the audience might have been reduced. ‘I was just singing like that. If you love it then good).’ And then I check views and some 2 billion views for that. But times have changed and I think what people like is the rawness, the real authenticity,” in an interaction with comedians Sapan Verma, Atul Khatri and Sahil Shah for their show Chill Shesh on YouTube.
Shaan is a well-reckoned playback singer in Bollywood having sung ample songs for popular films. Some of his best tracks include Chand Sifarish, Woh Ladki Hai Kahan, Jab Se Tere Naina, Chaar Kadam and Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh.
