The impossible happened in Mumbai last evening. Awards show hater, Aamir Khan was present at an awards function held in Mumbai. The 8th Kelvinator Gr8. Women Awards 2009 held at ITC Grand Maratha saw Aamir making a surprise entry and enthralling many present but at the same time charging up the entire atmosphere of the event for good.
An annual affair, the awards are conceived and founded by Anu & Shashi Ranjan and now in its 8th year they were given in a total of 21 different categories to women achievers from all over the country. Apart from Aamir the event was attended by some very prominent celebrities like Kumarmanglam Birla, Yash Chopra, Harman Baweja, Roop Kumar Rathod, Alka Yagnik, Prem Chopra, Farah Khan and many others. The theme of the event was Anu Ranjan’s cause against female foeticide called ‘Beti’.
The highlight of the evening was a special tribute paid to 4 women for their bravery – 3 from Mumbai during the 26/11 attacks and one decorated police officer from Jammu & Kashmir. Farah Khan who gave away the prize for Medicine to Dr. Firuza Parikh personally thanked her for helping her conceive her 3 kids. Aamir said he was delighted to be in such august company of strong and independent women – “God created both man and woman and she created them equal” he quipped.
There was a sizzling dance performance by Celina Jaitley who paid a tribute to lifetime achievement winner Zeenat Aman. There were performances from television stars Kushal Punjabi, Barkha Bisht, Gaurav Chopra & Mouni Roy; singer Mohit Chauhan belted out his latest hit “Masakalli” from Delhi 6 and his other hit songs from the past, a stand-up comedy act by Purbi Joshi and Ali Asgar, which had the audience in splits and rajasthani folk dance performace. The show was anchored by Roshni Chopra and Manish Paul.
