Double role films are a passe in Bollywood now, and the last good double role we probably loved was Shah Rukh Khan in Don! However, this classic – the good one and the bad one – with the same facial identity has hardly gone wrong. And Bollywood turned into a classic goldmine when it explored the theme with twins – be it Seeta Aur Geeta or Chaalbaaz! Does it hold the same impact for Kriti Sanon in Do Patti? Well, definitely, Yes! But does it help this thriller attain a heavenly climax? I doubt!

The film has been written and produced by Kanika Dhillon, and after Hasseen Dillruba’s sequel Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, we might see a pattern here with the woman who presents flaws of a woman with the utmost sincerity, creating a web that she gets entangled into herself!

Probably, the same happens with Do Patti starring Kajol, Shaheer Sheikh and Kriti Sanon. Interestingly, the importance of the actors in this film can also be taken in the same order, with the least important character named first! Yes, believe it or not, Kajol being a part of this film or not does not make an iota of a difference to the story of this thriller film! And we will explain how and why, later!

Do Patti Movie Review: Script Analysis

So, the story of Do Patti is very simplistic – you have seen shades of this story in Bipasha Basu’s twin characters in Alone, Neha Dhupia’s twin sisters in Sheesha, in fact, Tabu’s twin roles in the recently done Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 as well. So, Shailly and Saumya have a troubled childhood that leaves one of them mentally strong and the other weak. It also sort of creates a fine, distinct line between the two Kriti Sanons – the good sister and the evil sister. The plot thickens when the two fall for the same man, Shaheer Sheikh, who obviously falls for the bad one but marries the good man, and this is where the entire story and the drama start weaving!

The story very quickly turns into a tale of domestic abuse turning grey, with Kajol trying to empathize with the victim, prying the abuser, and vilifying the evil sister! There is also an additional Tanvi Azmi, trying to guide an already strong-headed Kajol who tries to shuffle this deck of cards so ignorantly that it scatters with all the cards facing up and every move turning into a bad deal!

While the film turns into a very good thriller in the first half, building an entire tower from this pack of cards, it crumbles down with one wrong move – when Kajol decides to delve into an already towering story to take it to another height and probably this is where Kanika Dhillon mostly falters in usually all of her writings! She suddenly does not know how to take care of all the glittering gold she digs in her story and gets so blinded in that glitter that she is unable to move a step forward without trampling or crushing something or the other!

Do Patti Movie Review: Star Performance

However, despite the flawed climax, Do Patti works brilliantly because of Kriti Sanon. You will love both of her characters and probably know the story as soon as you connect with both of them. But you still root for her, watching her shine on screen like never before. She makes every minute detail of her characters count. While you love to hate the evil one, you hate to love the good one, because you can clearly sense you are placing your bets on the wrong card!

Shaheer Sheikh is the wrongest bet in this whole game, and probably this already set game was a lost deal for him since the beginning as he plays a spoilt-rich Haryanvi brat, and no offense to his terrific acting skills, but his screen presence is so good that it is almost unbelievable to see him having a negative streak! He struggles, plays bad, and plays hard to play bad, but the script, dialogues, direction, and editing nothing supports or works in his favor, making him the weakest in this pack of cards while he could have been the joker of this pack with the maximum power deciding the fate of this interesting game!

Unfortunately, the weakest one in this game is Kajol! While she checks every box in this story, it is the lack of an author-backed role that turns the villain of this story to be honest! Watch it, and you will agree that Kajol not being in this film could not have made any difference to the story! Either the audience could decode the suspense themselves, or Kriti herself could have revealed the entire gig in the climax (and could have been a better climax) than Kajol trying to connect dots that are already a single-straight line! Tanvi Azmi, Vivek Mushran, and Brijendra Kala just exist in this twisted tale for no reason!

Do Patti Movie Review: Direction, Music

The music of the film seems so unnecessary, and it has been ages that we have been debating about the use and necessity of songs and item songs, but Bollywood seems to be addicted with an unexplainable logic that is so insane that it even adds an unnecessary Holi song in the narrative, write before the final act!

Meanwhile, Shashanka Chaturvedi tries very hard to keep all his deals and bets under the table till he gets trumped in probably a blind bet! He doubles the stakes but does not have an eye to pick the write card or probably, writer Kanika Dhillon shuffles this deck so horribly via Kajol that the director gets the worst of the cards that pushes him to losing end!

Do Patti Movie Review: The Last Word

Kriti Sanon definitely turns the ace of this pack, nailing every move. While her Saumya is freshly baked out of the oven, Shailley seems to get heavily inspired by Deepika Padukone’s Cocktail-ish act, but it all adds up for the good of this story that sadly comments on domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse in a very non-impactful manner despite having a stellar cast! I’m still figuring out where it all went wrong! Probably when Kanika Dhillon decided to turn her feminist card act like a veto?

But still, I am in love with Kriti and her Do Patti!

3 stars!
